SOUTHWELL AMATEURS 3 WOLLATON III 0

MAA Premier Division.
Saturday March 14th, 2009.

Team: Arron Mapley, Sheldon Miller, Josh Lebilinski, Dave Smith, Rocky Bennet-Bull, Micky Evans, Steve Burton, Chris Page, Ben Cheetham, Liam Hill, Mark Middleton.
Subs: Dave Grantham, (used).

The last two weeks were always going to be the toughest for Wollaton Thirds in our 2008/09 campaign, with back-to-back fixtures against Southwell (away) and Woodborough (home) and the fortnight's preparations for both games were as good an indicator as any at how managing the Third team can be quite a challenge. I had been getting so many late night texts from Tosh that the wife is starting to wonder what is
going on.

I lost count how many times our line ups changed for both of these fixtures. Firstly, let's start with Southwell away, a team we took to the wire early on in the season at
our place and  lost by only one goal but a team that really turned the second half screw in our cup semi-final, coming on strong after half time (1-1) to finally run out 5-1 winners in that game, setting themselves up with a cup final clash against Woodborough, a team we were to face a week later.

We were determined to seek revenge against Southwell but our plans took a real big blow when the first team management lobbied for Nick, Smithy and Ben Cheetham, the latter we'd lined up early doors as the ressies had no game. It was a difficult 24 hours of preparation with much 'horse trading' being done between ourselves and the first team, finally relenting on Nick's call up but managing to retain the services of Ben Cheetham and Smithy holding firm with his loyalties in the face of third team adversity at the foot of the table. To compound matters, Joe Lewis (half marathon running), Fishy (rib injury) and Cressy (away in Brighton......with his missus), three established third team regulars, were unavailable, a big loss considering Cressy had put in a storming shift the week before against Brunts. Fortunately, Pagey stepped in to plug the gap at right mid, Liam filled in at left mid and Burts lined up in the middlee alongside Micky, with Ben and Mark up front.

We couldn't have asked for a better surface to play on when we arrived at Southwell, as the Ams had secured Southwell City's lower pitch, a big expansive pitch with a tidy surface only blighted by a forceful cross wind which normally picks up at their place. Unfortunately we could have asked for a better ref, as the man in the middle later proved to be woeful ad a constant drain on any promise of a flowing game of football.

The first 20 minutes was all Wollaton, we started far brighter and Ben and Mark caused some real problems up front, fashioning a handful of very good chances from both some decent passing play and by defending from the top, forcing Southwell into mistakes and using the ball very resourcefully with some good close control. We went very close when Mark volleyed Ben's pass just past the top corner. But after a bright 20 minute start Southwell started to get hold of the ball in the middle of the park and started using the full width of the pitch, stretching us out of shape. They took the lead with a speculative effort from 25 yards which looked to be going over but a freak crosswind cut across the ball and took some pace off the shot and forced the ball the wrong side of the bar for us. It was almost as if time stood still as the ball was maipulated in the air by the wind.

A few minutes later we experienced a blow when Pagey pulled a back muscle which hampered his normal game after his bright start. Southwell got a second when they worked the ball well down the left and a text book cut back from the byline was driven inside the near post. A few minutes later Smithy apparently got booked but no one saw it.

In the second half we continued to maintain a foothold on the game but you could feel any opportunity of a comeback was slipping away as a few of our lads picked up knocks and we only had one sub to call upon in Davie G. Halfway through the second half the game had to be stopped when a 50/50 between Josh and Southwell's central midfielder ended up with Southwell's player writhing on the ground with a suspected broken leg. The match was stopped for 25 minutes while we all waited for an ambulance. As we the wait ensued, news of Liverpool's stunning 4-1 win over United at Old Trafford was shared on the sidelines by a spectator and Davie G erupted with shouts of joy, which raised a few eyebrows in the circumstances!

The ambulance finally turned up and when Southwell's player was despatched, the game got going again but soon was declared officially over by the referee when he gave Smithy a second yellow card when he asked Dave why everyone was calling him Ben Chapman! Dave replied that no one called him Ben Chapman, there wasn't a Ben Chapman on the pitch but there is a Ben Cheetham. The ref, mishearing the reply totally out of context, asked: "Are you accusing me of cheating?!" and sent him off! Minutes later he confirmed to all and sundry what a hopeless referee he is by allowing Southwell to play on after their left winger picked up a through ball 10 yards offside, everyone stopped including the winger wen the lino flagged but the ref played on. The winger was so far down the field out of range of any other player it was like watching kids football. A blind man with a bag on his head could have seen it was offside.

Wollaton Thirds have won three fair play trophies in the last few years, but we let rightly rip at the referee for such a farcical performance. This was the first time in years in which we felt like we were up against two forms of opposition; Southwell and the ref. After the game Micky approached the ref with Smithy to gain some reasoning behind the sending off. The ref finally relented by stating that we wouldn't the send the cards in to the FA. A week later we arrive at the club for our game against Woodborough to find he's gone against word and has now sent the
cards in. Where's the integrity?

Man of the Match: Mark Middleton. Worked tirelessly up front all afternoon.

WOLLO TAKE SECOND HALF HAMMERING AT PINXTON

MAA Premier Division
Pinxton, Derbyshre. Saturday Feb 28th, 2009.

Team: Dale Webster, Sheldon Miller, Joe Lewis, Steve Burton, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Liam Hill, Micky Evans, Andy Creswell, Josh Slade, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton. Subs: Chris Fish, Dave Grantham (used).

The least said about this game, the better. We took the quickest lead in Wollo Thirds history (and probably on MAA Division record this season), after netting in 12 seconds with a three man move straight from the quick off, with Mark weaving his way through the Pinxton half to play Nick in who side footed past their keeper from close range. It was a bit surreal as Pinxton hadn't even touched the ball and it seemed more like a practice move than the real thing, credit to our lads for being the first on their toes, leaving Pinxton flat footed.

Then we went 2-0 up about 15 minutes later when Nick unleashed a trademark drive in off the post from an acute angle. Pinxton rallied a bit and started to show frustration by getting into the game, whilst their old school striker got stuck into our back four, displaying his old Vinny Jones party piece to Muller and later chucked a punch at Rocky, off the ball. Then the same player left his studs on Joe's shin with a late two footed challenge. The ref bottled it and gave him just a yellow card, begging the question 'what exactly do you have to do to see red?'.

Pinxton got a goal back just before half time but there was no sign of the complete madness that was to follow in the second half, which saw six goals conceded by Wollo.

In short, we failed to deal with Pinxton's long balls in Smithy's absence and we made some very silly mistakes to gift Pinxton most of their efforts. We could have had a couple ourselves, with a Nick piledriver hitting the underside of the bar and bouncing goalside of the line but the ref didn't spot it, like most incidents that afternoon, and Cressy had a storming effort saved which looked top corner bound. But it was a case of ifs, buts and maybes. In the end we were outfought though not necessarily outplayed, since Pinxton pumped the long ball all second half and did it with great effect.

Man of the Match: Nobody.

WOLLO 3RDS FOOTY VID CLIP OF THE WEEK: MESSI MAGIC

It's Lionel time again, Gents....here's his corking chip for Argentina against Mexico in the last Copa America, a quality finish and he doesn't even break stride, sending the south American commentator into bananas mode....not exactly sure of the literal translation but sounds like an expression of unadultered love for Lionel "All Night Long"....bonkers commentary, sublime finish. Lovely stuff.

Excuse the poor quality of this clip below, taken direct from Argie TV but well worth watching for the sit down keepy ups....

And here's the quality Adidas advert "Impossible Is Nothing" featuring Lionel taking on Rolf Harris...

WOLLATON III 1 SOUTHWELL AMATEURS 5

MAA Senior League Cup Semi-Final.

Saturday February 21st, 2009. Beeston Weirfields, Notts.

Team: Rhys, Sheldon Miller, Joe Lewis, Dave Smith, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Micky Evans, Liam Hill, Andy Creswell, Chris Fish, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton. Subs: Steve Burton, Josh Slade (used) and Dave Grantham.Wollo Goal: Nick Evans. They'll be a full match report to follow in the next few days documenting the disappointing semi-final loss at the hands of high fliers, Southwell Amateurs. In the meantime, here's a quality photo documentary of the game, captured by Jules.

The 5-1 score line tells of a damning defeat but it was very much a game of two halves, with Wollaton edging the first half after taking a 1-0 lead through Nick Evans.

Southwell managed to get an excellent equaliser through their potent left winger to make it 1-1 at half time.

We performed well up until about the hour mark at which point we committed some silly mistakes in our final third and handed victory to Southwell on a silver platter, gifting them three goals in the space of 15 minutes and left ourselves with an impossible mountain to climb.

Left: Nick Evans makes it 1-0 to Wollaton with a header at the far post.

Left: Southwell's potent left winger leads a charge on Wollo's goal and bagged the first half
 equaliser.
Below Left: Micky has a glorious opportunity to lob the keeper after a defensive mix up by Southwell leaves the goal at his mercy but the effort falls short, lacking just enough pace on the ball.
Below Left: At 2-1 down Wollaton had a great chance when a good through ball left the
Southwell defence flat footed ball and found Cressy one-on-one with their keeper but, once again, with the goal at our mercy we couldn't hit the onion bag.

Left: Smithy launches a throw in goal bound.

Bottom: 'The loneliness of the long distance wing back'... this picture sums up the feeling of chucking away a cup semi-final.

Cressy cuts a dejected, lone figure in the final minutes after putting in a hardworking shift over 90 minutes, reflecting on what might have been if, as a team, we had been a bit more resourceful in possession.

The last 45 minutes was our worst second half performance all season. To compound matters, when we finally trudged back into the dressing room we had to absorb the news that Forest had lost 3-1 at home to Derby. Another bitter pill to swallow.

Full focus on the league now boys. We'll have to make sure we give Southwell much more of a game over 90 minutes when we play them on March 14th.

We're away this Saturday (Feb 28th) to Pinxton, a massive relegation battle six pointer. We'll have to resign this defeat to the dustbin of history and pick ourselves up. Dig in......onwards and upwards, Gents...

WOLLO THIRDS FOOTY VID CLIP OF THE WEEK: MARADONA WARMS UP FOR NAPOLI

Here's a bit of 80s footy footage from El Diego. Having blazed a trail through Barca's nightlife, Maradona moved on to Naples in the 80s to show off his footwork on and off the pitch. By 1994 the whole World got a clear idea of where some of that zest for life came from and it wasn't from a plentiful supply of Mars bars from Napoli's club sponsors.

Not too sure about the musical backdrop to his warm up; 'Life Is Life' by Opus, the Belgium hip-swingers clad in tracky bottoms and leather coats with wet perms. Guess you could see how they held an attraction for the young Maradona. Can't fault the skills though; top drawer.

WOLLO 3RDS 2008/09 SEASON MEGA MIX: TRACK OF THE WEEK

The Wollo 3rds weekly blog feature continues, this time around it's Wollo 3rds Captain Micky Evans' top choice; The Killers with 'All These Things That I've Done', in my opinion, one of the best tracks on our Mix CD and the one which is probably most apt soundtrack/anthem to our season so far.....whatever comes our way we'll keep believing and battling on because we've got soul ;)

Wollaton III 1 FC05 2

MAA Premier Division.

Saturday January 3rd, 2008. Beeston Weirfields, Notts.

Team: Dale Webster, Sheldon Miller, Frazer Barron, Dave Smith, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Micky Evans, Matt Reeves, Andy Creswell, Chris Fish, Liam Bates, Mark Middleton. Subs: Bez and Dave Grantham (used).

Wollo Goal: Mark Middleton.

After a 7-2 drubbing away at the hands of TVFC in our last game of 2008, we were looking to open our account of 2009 with a clean slate. No one connected with Wollaton Thirds expected to see a New Year with us at the bottom of the MAA Premier Division table but that’s the reality that dawns after such a disastrous result just before Christmas.

Nick Evans has been away on a month long honeymoon jaunting across South America , so was naturally a big loss for the game away to TVFC and also for this game at home to FC05, a sobering first fixture after a break of festivities, frolics, food and drink.

Nick returns this Saturday. We hope the street kids of Rio have taught him a thing or two when it comes to keepy uppies with various out of date fruit, working on his first touch. In return, I expect he’s shown them a thing or two on how to decapitate a keeper from 12 yards.

So no Nick last week though Mark returned from a three week lay off having recovered from man flu. Left back Joe Lewis was (and still is) away in Kaula Lumpar though still finds time to e-mail us all asking if we want tickets for this season’s QMC panto. After his performance last year as ‘Wishy Washy’ I’ll give that one a miss – fortunately his performances on the field have been markedly more self respecting than those on the stage, so Joe was also a tangible loss last week. And the list continued…..Burts was unavailable with a swollen ankle and the keeper, Rhys, was away too. So that’s four key senior players away.

I’d hazard a guess that in the light of such absences other teams would have looked at last weekend’s fixture, would no doubt have felt their backsides mildly contract and perhaps subsequently called the game off citing some reason or another. It’s good to have people around like Frank and Bill who provide a gentle nudge at such times, not forgetting the support also of ressies Manager, Tony Alvey, who helped us by passing Frazer back down to fill in at left back and passing Reevey to bolster the midfield after a lay off with a torn hamstring.

We have had no problem scoring goals this season (though without Nick it’s always going to have an effect), the problem has been conceding them at the other end and up against one of the best sides in the league in FC05 we had to do something different, so Rocky paired up with Smithy in the centre of defence and we played 4-2-3-1 with Micky and Reevey mostly holding in front of the back four and Cressy, Liam and Fishy playing higher midfield roles supporting Mark up front. Dale did the honours by donning the keepers gloves after getting a pass out, convincing his better half that the chance of ending up in hospital again with a cracked head needing 14 stitches would be remote.

It took 20 minutes for everyone to find their feet and their positions but once we settled the personnel complemented the system quite well. The main message before the game was to get players behind the ball whenever we lost possession and the penny dropped all round. We wasted no time in setting down a marker for FC05 with some strong challenges, with Smithy in particular making his presence felt which ruffled some feathers. Rocky and Smithy were quick to develop a solid partnership and were dominant in the air and Dale was a real bonus, providing a clear voice behind the back four. Young Frazer kept cool under pressure too, playing the ball out of some tight spots well early doors under pressure. We’d dealt with corners well all through the first half until FC05 beat us at the far post to head home and take the lead, Dale got a hand to the ball but it wasn’t enough to keep it out.

The reaction from Wollo was steadfast, we showed no signs of giving up and the work rate was spot on as we continued to press in all areas of the pitch and fought as hard as we have done all season for the spoils. Smithy came very close on two occasions with free kicks, one a real pile driver from 30 yards that the keeper only just managed to push over the bar. Half time: 1-0 to FC05.

At the start of the second half Bez stepped in at left back after Liam came off with a pulled groin and Frazer went up to right mid to demonstrate his versatility. Micky and Reevey worked well in the second half, breaking up a lot of FC05’s play. We retained the ball a lot better than of late as we played the way we were facing, with Micky pulling the strings in midfield. We got our reward halfway through the second half when Mark scored a superb equaliser after we’d put FC05 on the back foot for a period of ten minutes. Dave came on for me (cramp) with 25 minutes to go and we went in search of the winner as the play swung from one half to another. Mark always looked dangerous up front and Cressy put in a great shift giving FC05’s back four some troubles.

We started to get a little stretched with 20 minutes to go as FC05 worked the ball around well and they got the winner with a well worked goal that ended up with a low drive at the back post. Though we lost we have started 2009 as a far better side than the one that finished 2008 and we pushed FC05 all the way with four key senior players missing and amidst wholesale changes. FC05 asked us what we were doing at the bottom of this division. They’re not the first team to have asked us that. Over the next few weeks we can answer that one. The attitude and work rate from the lads was superb. If we play like that every Saturday from hereon in with the other lads to return we’ll show our true potential and proper league standing and may even win some silverware as we’re in the semi final of the league cup. Credit to everyone for starting 2009 with the right attitude.

Man of the Match: Micky Evans. Just pips Smithy and Rocky (who both had good games) with a top midfield performance.

WOLLO DRAW SOUTHWELL AMATEURS IN MAA SENIOR LEAGUE CUP

At the MAA League meeting on Thursday January 8th, the draw for the MAA League cups were made.

Woodborough were first out the bag and were paired with County Nalgo. Lady Luck had shone down us, steering us aside from an away fixture with Woodborough (the only draw we didn't want on their school pitch) and gave us a home tie with league leaders Southwell

Despite the vast difference in current league standings, we have always faired well against Southwell, taking them to the wire in all our previous meetings and we know that, on our day, we can give anyone a game in this league. Needless to say, we are relishing this fixture in our own back yard, particularly after our recent close run defeat against Southwell just before Christmas.

WOLLO 3RDS 2008/09 SEASON MEGA MIX: TRACK OF THE WEEK

TVFC 7 WOLLATON III 2

MAA Premier Division Fixture.

Cenral Avenue, Beeston, Notts. Saturday December 20th, 2008.

Team: Rhys, Sheldon Miller, Joe Lewis, Dave Smith, Steve Burton, Micky Evans, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Andy Creswell, Josh Slade, Ben Cheetham, Chris Fish.

Subs: Dave Grantham, Tremayne Blair (used).

Wollo Goals: Andy Creswell & Chris Fish

Before you read on with this summarised match report, click on the You Tube clip below to accompany your read with a suitable themed musical soundtrack which probably does more to describe the afternoon's events than any words can do here.

This was one of the lowest points of our season, with this defeat ranking alongside our 4-0 defeat away to Notts. The omens weren't good when Burts turned up half cut after his works Christmas do the night before and with Nick away in South America on his honeymoon and Liam Hill away, we stepped out on to the pitch not at our full strength.

And what a pitch it was, a contender for worst pitch in the league, alongside Woodborough. With poor drainage it held all the rain that had been dumped on it over the previous days and cut up badly from the kick off. However, both teams had to play on it and TVFC got to grips with it better than we did.

TVFC (being a Church team) started in a charitable fashion, handing out drinks bottles to us before the game but the charity begun and ended at that point. We then preceeded to show the most charity, opening up a path to our goal better than Moses could have done for TVFC to exploit.

They carved us open for their first and scored a second from a corner, heading home at the near post. We got back into the game with good play by Ben Cheetham, who picked up a ball down by channel from Muller and turned a couple of defenders before crossing low to Cressy, who finished well.

For a Church team, TVFC show a fair degree of petulance up front.  Their striker is a good player but detracts from his ability with his constant harping on to the ref. He had a very good game but he was up against one Wollo centre half who was half cut.

I could go on with details but I'll summarise at this point to say that in the second half we got battered because we failed to retain the ball and gave away possession far too cheaply. We were slow off the mark, slow to challenge for first and second balls and we gave them far too much time and space to play. The greasy conditions were difficult for keepers and Rhys struggled with three shots in particular which were spilled and led to goals but he wasn't the only one to have an off day.

We'll be looking to avenge this result when we play TVFC back at Weirfields at full strength.

Man of the Match: Ben Cheetham...worked his socks off all game to give us a cutting edge up front, held the ball up well and showed some neat footwork, working the channels into the box.

WOLLATON III 3 SOUTHWELL AMATEURS 4

MAA Premier Division Fixture.

Beeston Weirfields, Notts. Saturday November 29th, 2008.

Team: Rocky Bennett-Bull, Fraser Barron, Joe Lewis, Dave Smith, Steve Burton, Micky Evans, Andy Creswell, Liam Hill, Chris Fish, Josh Slade, Nick Evans.

Subs: Sheldon Miller, Dave Grantham.

A well fought game by Wollaton, who went 2-0 down and then came back to make it 3-2, Southwell then got an equaliser and bagged a winner in the last 10 minutes witha  specualtive effort but we took it to the wire.

An encouraging performance that shows we are turning a corner. Full match report to follow after it appears in the Wollaton FC programme next week. In the meantime, drink in this team shot (above) taken before the game for this season's shirt sponsors, John Pye & Sons Auctioneers (for a wide range of retail stock and liquidation assets):

BRUNTS OB 0 WOLLATON III 4

MAA Premier Division League Cup Quarter Final.

Cuckney, North Notts. Saturday Nov 22nd,2008

Team: Rhys, Frazer Barron, Joe Lewis, Steve Burton, David Smith, Micky Evans, Andy Creswell, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Liam Hill, Mark Middleton, Nick Evans. Subs: Josh Slade, David Grantham, Sheldon Miller.

Wollo Goals: Mark Middleton, Liam Hill (2), Nick Evans.

With Brunts mid table and ourselves now at the foot of the MAA Prem, this quarter final league cup fixture away at North Notts could have looked a mismatch, but we're very much aware the current league table isn't a true reflection of ability.

It is a reflection of form though and clearly Brunts have earned the points to get to 7th place though they've played some weaker teams than we have thus far. Those strong teams they have played against have delivered swift judgement, with FC05 beating them 8-0 and Southwell Amateurs turning them over 10-0 both in the space of two weeks. That must have been one fortnight that dragged.

The biggest consideration of late has been our form without the ball. As discussed before the game, with the ball we're fair game for any fixture but without the ball we've not been defensively strong enough all round. So for this fixture against Brunts we sacrificed the luxury of two wide players and went with a compact three man midfield on a smaller pitch to sit tight, but compensated our attacking options with a third man up front in the shape of Liam Hill, who has performed well when called upon and has been patient waiting for a start.

From the off, we got stuck into Brunts and pushed up, squeezing their options and took the play into their half and got an opening goal after an early strike by Nick from outside the box was spilled by their keeper on a very cold day and Mark Middleton gambled to pick up the scraps and stab the ball into the net. Minutes later we went on the charge again, with the midfield all supporting the lads up front well. We got a second through Liam, another good poacher's finish (it's good to see us getting more goals in this fashion) and we could have had a third when their keeper pulled off a brilliant save after Nick headed a superb Mark Middleton cross goalwards.

Brunts forced a few corners and delivered a couple of good balls from the right but in the main we managed to contain their threats, with the back four keeping good shape with a high line, marshalled well by Smithy who was having a good game.

In the second half we put the game beyond them when Liam broke free and sprung their offside trap to get a third with a cool finish. At 3-0 and with Liam on a hat trick it was a tough decision to make changes but with three subs freezing their cods off on the sidelines, it's only right to try to get a run out for everyone, to maintan fitness levels and to keep competition for places healthy. So Liam came off and Josh came on and started to thaw out.

Rocky hit the bar after connecting with a firm low cross after a well worked move down the right and at the other end Burts and Smithy were working well, the latter dominant in the air and bringing the ball out from the back in Baresi style. Frazer came off with 20 minutes to go after a good performance at right back and a few minutes later the game was wrapped up when the ref awarded Wollo a dodgy penalty, which Nick Evans netted in Fishy's absence.

So there you have it; bottom of the league but the winning runs continue in the cup and that puts us into the MAA Premier Division League Cup semi-final, with a fixture in January against either Woodborough, Southwell or Nalgo. Well done lads, a good shift put in by everyone.

Man of the Match: Dave Smith...we scored four goals at the other end but, most importantly, we kept a clean sheet at the other and Smithy led by example, a rock at the heart of defence and kept the ball well when he won it.

WOLLO THIRDS FOOTY VID CLIP OF THE WEEK: STUART PEARCE

After a disappointing loss against Pinxton, here's a brilliant video to put a smile back on your face. This brings back so many happy memories, not least away at Spurs in the Cup, away at Stoke in the Cup and (though it's not featured here) away to Man U in 1990 when he was given torrents of abuse for his peno miss in Turin he replied by slamming a 35-yard free kick past Sealey at the Stretford End to clinch a 1-0 win.

The man's a living legend; never shirked a tackle, never let his head drop, never went missing on a football field, single handedly grabbed games by the scruff of the neck, wore his heart on his sleeve and never gave anything less than 100%. What more do you want in a footballer? Stuart Pearce, take a bow son.....

Great use of music too; Nino Rota from the final scene in Godfather III and Land of Hope & Glory, nice touch.

WOLLATON III 4 PINXTON NORTH END 5

MAA Premier Division League Match

Beeston Weirfields, Notts. Saturday November 8th 2008.

Team: Rhys, Sheldon Miller, Joe Lewis, Dave Smith, Steve Burton, Andy Creswell, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Josh Slade, Chris Fish, Nick Evans, Dave rantham. Subs (all used): Liam Hill, Fraser Barron, Micky Evans.

If you want to see goals on a Saturday afternoon, come and see Wollo 3rds. Unfortunately, there were far too many shipped in this game for our liking after we'd taken a 2-0 lead and looked set to overwhelm Pinxton in the first half.

With Micky Evans having been away the week before, our Captain subbed up with Andy Creswell (Wollaton Thirds' answer to Dirk Kuyt) demonstrating his versatility by taking up the central midfield spot alongside Rocky, with Fishy and Josh giving us width on both wings. Mark Middleton was still suffering from man flu, so Dave Grantham kept the number 9 shirt and continued his run of form up front after a decent performance against Whatton the week before.

Two weeks before this match we'd won an epic 8-5 cup tie on penos after a 3-3 draw after extra time. Naturally, Pinxton were after a bit of vengence but we were the first to get in the groove as we took the game to them, with some slick passing. Fishy put us 1-0 up with a well taken penalty and we went 2-0 up after Rocky's low and dangerous cross was turned into the net by a Pinxton defender.

If you were a betting man at that point you'd have put your house on the team in blue going on to score a hatful but strange as it was, we lost our heads and the baility to play a 10 yard ball to each other and let Pinxton back into the game and they had a strong 20 minute spell with the wind in which they bagged three goals before half time, showing some good fighting spirit though we were slow to make solid challenges as they carved through our own half.

They hammered another nail into our coffin straight after half time with a fourth and after that we started to bring on the cavalry for Wollo in the shape of Micky Evans for Rocky, Frazer for myself and Liam for Dave and the changes, particularly in midfield and up front, gave us an extra dimension and we started to put Pinxton back on the ropes, bagging a third goal through Nick and then we were awarded a peno when Nick was brought down and Fishy gave the keeper the eyes again to make it 4-4. Cressy was a big catalyst for us, putting in a quality shift in the middle of the park and covering a lot of ground.

We were back in it but despite our constant pressure we couldn't get a winner and in the last few minutes Pinxton broke loose down the middle again and netted the winner. In the whole game they had six shots and scored five goals. We were good with the ball but without it we failed to get enough players behind the ball and that was our undoing.

Man of the Match: Andy Creswell...like Durk Kuyt but with less hair. Never stopped running all game and gave 100% for the cause, challenged solidly for everything.

WOLLO THIRDS FEATURED FOOTY VID: THE LITTLE BIRD FROM BRAZIL...GARRINCHA...THE ORIGINAL WING WIZARD

If you buy just one football book this Christmas make it this one - Garrincha: The Triumph and the tragedy of Brazil's forgotten footballing hero.

I took five footy books on our honeymoon last year and this was by far the best. Before Best and Gazza was Manuel Francisco dos Santos, affectionally known by Brazilians as 'Garrincha' (the little bird) - a young lad from a pauper's village who had a deformed spine and 'bent' legs (his left knee bent out and his right knee bent out but doctors said there was nothing that could be done for him).

Garrincha was known amongst footballing scouts in the Rio Grande region but many simply would not believe that there was a unknown footballer "who lived in the woods and had bent legs who was totally unmarkable and who could dribble like the devil",  he was overlooked until his late teens. It's a story not too disimilar to Lionel Messi's who suffered from a growth defect as a young boy in Argentina.

Garrincha played for his local factory team until Botafogo signed him up in 1953. In his first training session, he demonstrated his extraordinary skills by dribbling the ball through the legs of Nilton Santos, a Brazilian international defender and defensive midfielder with 16 international caps, who then requested himself for Garrincha to be hired. He played in a 5-0 win for Botafogo's reserves and then scored a hat trick on his first-team début against Bonsucesso on 19 July 1953.

Garrincha went on to play 50 international matches for Brazil between 1955 and 1966, and was a starter for the national team in the 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups. Brazil never lost a game when Pele and Garrincha were in the same line up (the only loss in 1966 against Hungary was when Pele was injured).

Veteran football writers say that the start of the 1958 World Cup quarter final between Brazil and the fearsome USSR marked 'the greatest three minutes in the history of football' during which time Garrincha ran riot and Brazil hit the woodwork three times. But he wasn't interested in goals; he was interested in dribbling.

(Clips of Garrincha in action):

Garrincha would often beat a man and then track back with the ball to have another go, driving his fellow players to frustration. He wasn't interested in money, he was often taken advantage of by clubs who got him to sign blank contracts and then underpaid him. He was a pure and raw football talent who lived for the moment and had as many twists and turns off the pitch as on it with multiple marriages (including his last to a Brazilian samba queen), battles with drink, footballing comebacks and personal tragedies.

I won't ruin the read but suffice to say, this book totally overshadows the vast majority of mundane ghost written half baked efforts punted out by modern day footballers. Pele was great but it is Garincha who is mostly fondly held in Brazilian hearts.

PINXTON NE 7 WOLLATON III 8 (AFTER PENS; 3-3 AET)

MAA Senior Cup

Pinxton NE 3 Wolloton III 3 AET
Wolloton win 5-4 on penalties

Church Lane West, Pinxton,. Sat. Oct 25th 2008.

Team: Rhys Holloway, Fraser Barron, Steve Burton, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Joe Lewis, Josh Slade, Mickey Evans, Andy Creswell, Chris Fish, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton. Subs: David Grantham, Liam Hill

Wollo Goals: Nick Evans (3), Josh Slade, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Mark Middleton, Andy Creswell and Joe Lewis.

Once again the Thirds have got off to a sluggish start to the season and despite a couple of decent performances we have only a single point to show for our endeavour. Whilst I have no doubt that we will soon start picking up some wins it could be another battle for us in the league this year.

So a cup-tie today is a distraction and an opportunity to try and kick start our season. We have had such a poor record in cup games since reaching the semi final in the Championship winning season, it would be great if we can progress to the latter rounds this season.

With Nick Evans back from his honeymoon the only real decision on players was who to partner Steve Burton with at centre back. Following Joe’s performance at left back the previous week I decided to drop Rocky into the back four allowing Joe to continue in his preferred role. Andy Creswell continues his mission to play in every position this season and he can now tick of Centre Midfield from the list. Adam Martin was back in Notts for the weekend and was able to provide his knowledgeable assistance in the warm up and on the touchline.

The first 10 minutes really set the tone for the game, end-to-end and very open, with both Midfields trying to exert some control on the game. We went a goal down when their striker latched onto a long through ball and chipped Rhys. Once again we had to respond to going a goal down and like the resolve shown by Liverpool in recent weeks the reaction was first class.

We started to work the ball around the pitch and the right flank in particular, Fraser at right back was having a solid game and linking up well with Josh. We gradually got hold of the game and it was only a matter of time before we got back on level terms. No surprises where it came from, Nick dispatched a fearsome drive from an acute angle on the edge of the box and nearly took the net off. We scored some great goals here last season but that is right up there with them.

When Pinxton did threaten we did look assured at the back, Rocky was putting in a great display and Burts was as commanding as ever. You can tell that their centre forward has been around the block a few times and he was constantly leaving his foot in and dishing out the afters. Fair play to our lads who went toe to toe, Mickey had to endure a couple of late tackles from him which rightfully saw the yellow card produced.

We secured a deserved half time lead when Josh followed another slick passing move with a great shot from the corner of the area, it sailed over the keeper and dropped just inside the back post. Nick was on hand to make sure it crossed the line but it was already in.

Half time has been our Achilles heel this season (sorry for the pun Shel) somehow we have struggled to recreate the first half performance level following the break. Despite us talking about concentration and work rate we once again let the opponents back into the game. I have to give them some credit as they did step up a gear but at times our defending was last ditch to say the least. Their equaliser was fortunate as a great sliding tackle from Burts looked to have snuffed out the chance but the spin from the deflection took the ball off the near post and in. Pinxton’s attacking pressure told when they went 3-2 up with another chip from the edge of the area.

Could we come back again?, it was encouraging to hear their players asking the ref “how long” at 15 minutes to go, they were visibly tiring and we looked the more likely side in the last 10 mins of normal time. A defence splitting through ball from Mark Middleton put Nick clean through and he finished the one-on-one sweetly. Three all at full time, classic cup-tie stuff.

We had made one change in the second half with Liam coming on for Chris and with the game on such a knife-edge I decided to stay as we were for extra time. It would have been a gamble to go 3 up front with tired legs at the back. Mark nearly won it for us with a swerving 25 yarder which just faded away from the far post and at the other end all of the defenders were putting in some heroic tackling to ensure we didn’t concede.

Penalties. I had already decided on the first 4 takers; Mark, Nick, Andy and Rocky and it was good to see them all up for it. The fifth spot was thrown open and Joe, despite blowing a bit in extra time, demanded the job. All our penalties were class. Mark slotted in the bottom left, Cresy nearly took the roof of the net off, Joe placed well to the right and Rocky simply put the keeper the wrong way and casually rolled it in. It was perhaps poetic justice that their Centre Forward who was probably a little fortunate to still be on the pitch after dishing out niggling late challenges all the game, scuffed his penalty into the ground and off the outside of the post. Nick was last up and sealed a dramatic victory with an emphatic strike.

It’s Brunts away in the next round on 15th November with a league game on the same ground the week after. Before then we are at Whatton in the Notts Junior Cup, the scene of another epic cup game several seasons ago. We also encounter Pinxton again in 2 weeks, this time in the league where we must pick up three points.

Man of the Match: Several contenders including Fraser, Burts, Mickey and Nick but it goes to Rocky who was asked to do a job in defence and produced a fine performance and scored in the shoot out.

WOLLO THIRDS HEAD OUT TO FAR EAST TO TRAIN WITH NEW TECHNIQUES TO LEARN LESSONS AFTER 4-0 LOSS AGAINST NOTTS

NOTTS FC 4 WOLLATON III 0

MAA Premier Division League Match

Aspley, Nottingham. Saturday October 18th.

Team: Rob Elliott, Fraser, Joe Lewis, Dave Smith, Steve Burton, Josh Slade, Micky Evans, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Chris Fish, Mark Middleton, Andy Creswell. Subs: Martin, Dave Grantham & Sheldon Miller (all used).

I'm not in much of a mood to do this one justice. In a nutshell, we were the better team in the first half though we got punished with a ball over the back four and their striker netted well to give them a 1-0 lead. Despite that we played the better football and had a host of chances in the first half and should have capitalised on those.

In the second half we had a mad 20 minutes straight from the kick off in which we got battered - out run and out thought and Notts exploited us with pace and movement. No doubt about it; they deserved the points. The pitch was superb and they did it justice, shame we didn't. We drew 2-2 against them at the start of the season because we kept our shape and kept focused. This is what happens when you let go of both for a significant period of time. Moreover, we lost the midfield battle and failed to track runners properly leaving too much for our defence to do.

We missed Nick up front, though Mark and Cressy worked tirelessly up front.

Man of the Match: Mark Middleton...worked tirelessly to try to get us back in it, as did Cressy.

WOODBOROUGH 8 WOLLATON III 5

MAA Premier Division League Match

Woodborough, Notts (on a pitch normally played on by 'The Borrowers'). Saturday Oct 4th, 2008

Team: Dale Webster, Sheldon Miller, Steve Burton, Joe Lewis, Andy Creswell, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Micky Evans, Dan Uber, Chris Fish, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton. Subs: Andy, Martin & Fraser (all used)

Wollo Goals: Woodborough OG, Nick Evans & Chris Fish (2).

I've put off writing this match report for almost two weeks. But now's time to despatch some sort of account of one of the strangest games we've taken part in and are ever likely to take part in. It's extremely rare to score five goals away from home and end up on the losing side but that's what happened when we faced Woodborough two ago.

There's no love lost between the two teams and for these fixtures Woodborough raise their game to their highest level on their home turf. We did exactly the same last season when we played up at the club and beat them 4-1. On their day they're very hard to live with but, like ourselves, they blow hot and cold through lack of availability and a lack of focus. Just look at their results over a season and you'll see that. They don't always play to their full potential.

Their pitch is unlike any in this league, a small school pitch with hardly any space between the edges of the penalty box and the sidelines and adequate shooting range from most places within the attacking half. It's so small it makes Weirfields, with its vast open spaces, look like the Nou Camp.

Never matter because for the first 20 minutes we got to grips with the game quicker than they did. We took the lead early on through a well worked goal which ended up with their defender getting the last touch. That shook them up after 10 minutes and they hit us on the break to equalise. But we had them on the ropes again soon after, forcing most of the play into their half with Nick and Mark looking dangerous and Dan carving out some good wing play on the right. We were awarded a stonewall penalty when Nick was hacked down in the box and Fishy netted with a text book bottom corner finish.

Then the defensive rulebook was well and truly chucked out the window for the rest of the game as attackers had a field day at both ends. Woodborough started to test Dale a little more from all angles and got a second on the break and started to find their rhythm. They got a third but we soon drew back level with another Chris Fish penalty after Nick was hacked down for a second time. Woodborough really started to stretch us across midfield though and we were caught in possession a few times and paid the price, conceeding a fourth.

We drew level again after a low driven free kick from the right by Muller found Nick at the far post, who smashed the ball home but we couldn't hold level for long as Woodborough delivered a sucker punch before half time to make it 5-4 at the break.

Probably the most decisive moment of the game was straight after half time when they got a second early on and that gave them a two goal cushion which we never really recovered from. We had a decent share of the play in the second half but struggled to make as much capital as we'd done in the first and Woodborough delivered some decisive blows and we could only manage one goal in reply to their three in total in the latter 45 minutes. The plus points were the debuts of three new players in Andy, Martin and Fraser, who we'll see more of over the next few games.

No matter which way you look at it, it's not a pretty score line but the test of character is how you bounce back from a Saturday afternoon like this. Losing 8-5 is ropey but in the grand scheme of things whether you've lost 1-0 or 8-5 you've still lost three points. Beating yourself up about it will achieve nothing. What we need to do is lay the demons to rest with a positive result. We've made some tweaks to the team this Saturday which will hopefully achieve that.

Man of the Match: Nick Evans.

WOLLO THIRDS FUNNY VID CLIP OF THE WEEK

Another classic from Fantasy Football, this time featuring Chinny Hill, who's clearly been at the Lambrini before the show...either that or he's just on his own planet as he rambles on having conversations with himself and whilst blurting out freudian slips right, left and centre which Skinner and Badiel lap up! Best bit is when Frank Skinner asks him "Do you think ball will bounce back?"

Also check out Dani Behr's face after the first minute of him talking, she's probably got little knowledge of football but looks to be thinking "Who's this clown?"

Pure comedy gold.

PS: All the latest Wollo 3rds match reports and stats will be uploaded in the next 48 hours....with details of our two latest epic cup wins, both secured in extra time in the last two weeks.

WOLLATON THIRDS AWARDED FAIR PLAY MATCH BALL

THIS JUST in from today's monthly circular from MAA League officials:

"Fair play Awards: Notts FA have awarded Beeston OBA, Calverton MW III, Wollaton III, Wollaton IV, Old Bemrosians and Southwell Amateurs II a match ball each in recognition of the high marks for sportsmanship which they have received. These teams deserve congratulations for helping our league to preserve its good image. The balls will be presented at the earliest opportunity."

Well done Wollaton Thirds and Fourths for this recognition and also to Beeston, Calverton, Old Bems and Southwell Ams II. It's a notable achievement, particularly this season which marks the 'Respect' campaign to clean up football.

One month in and we've not known a season like it: not one lost ball in the canal at Beeston or floating down the Weir. Not only are we not losing balls we're now adding to the collection. Remarkable, the Chairman will be pleased.  This could soon mean a ball each before each game so everyone can fire shots at Dale for the warm up!

TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE...

Couldn't resist uploading this image, taken on the last day of the 2003/04 season when we were presented with the MAA Division One Championship after our home game against Brunts at Ireland Avenue.

Good to see the nucleus of Wollaton Thirds still going strong today in 2008 some seven years after initially getting together in its current form.

Not only are we all a bit older and wiser but we've also progressed from £8 a night Sheila's Hostel stays in Cork to Barcelona for our end of season trips.

WOLLATON III 6 NUTHALL 3: NOTTS JUNIOR CUP, ROUND 1

Beeston Weirfields, Notts. Sat Sept 27th, 2008

Team: Dale Webster, Sheldon Miller, Andy Creswell, Steve Burton, Jo e Lewis, Micky Evans, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Jo sh Slade, Mark Middleton, Nick Evans, Chris Fish. Sub: Dave Grantham (used).

Wollo Goals: Nick Evans (4), Rocky Bennett-Bull, Mark Middleton,

This was the third Saturday in a row we played under clear blue skies and a warm, late summer sun and we basked in the conditions with one of our best performances for a while. We had to shuffle the pack a little bit with Andy Creswell filling in at left back and a full debut given to young Jo sh Slade at right mid.

It took us ten minutes to find feet all round with satisfactory passes but when we did we put down an early marker of intent. Josh showed some silky skills down the right to skip past a couple of challenges and hit the by-line before crossing low into the six yard box for Nick to stab the ball home. It was a typical five-a-side goal.

Nuthall almost got an equaliser five minutes later through a headed effort which looped over Dale but was cleared almost off the line by Muller. Nuthall were quick and lively up front and posed a threat from set pieces with a few big lads from midfield and defence. They got an equaliser when we appeared to have cleared our lines after they broke but the loose ball ran to one of their lads who struck the ball over Dale and our defence into an empty net; a very good finish.

They got their momentum going but we kept true to our passing game and stretched their defence by using the full width of the pitch. Nick put us 2-1 up with a well taken goal and that's how it stayed until half time. The second half was even more pleasing as for the last two games we've dropped our guard straight from the restart for 10 minutes but this time we kept our focus and stepped up another gear and increased the pressure and they struggled to live with it.

We scored the team goal of the game 20 minutes in when we broke from defence to attack, from one wing to another with Chris Fish then carving open their defence with a superb cross field ball to Nick, who held off a challenge to sweep the ball past their keeper. We could have had another when the ball broke loose from an attack and Muller (it reads better when you refer t yourself in the third person) picked up a loose ball from 30 yards out and hit an effort on the half volley which crashed against the bar.

Rocky put us 4-2 minutes later when he headed home a superb Chris Fish cross and Mark Middleton followed up with the solo goal of the game, cutting in from the left before unleashing a superb shot over their keeper into the far corner of the net.

That was the action at their end but back at our end, credit where it's due to the whole defence for keeping such sound shape and, in particular, Burts and Joe who were rock solid at the back and won everything in the air. Bouncing balls in our final third have caused us so many problems down the years but this defensive partnership could put an end to all that.

Nuthall got a consolation goal on the break but we wrapped up the game when Nick got his fourth and the game was over as a contest. We got we deserved by playing passing football, competing for every tackle and header, staying focus and by putting in a good shift.

Man of the Match: Everyone. Everyone was at the top of their game, a superb team performance.

TERRACE TRIBES: No 1...The Kop

Here's some old 1960s BBC footage when Panorama made a documentary special on the Liverpool FC and the football fever that grips Merseyside. This is when the Kop alone used to hold 21,000 people; check the rhythmic swaying and the Beatles tunes being sung. This is what being a football fan is all about: passion on the terraces. Though the least said about urinating down rolled up newspapers the better.

JAMIE CARRAGHER OFFERS TALK SPORT PRESENTER OUT ON AIR!

This is a radio clip from Talk Sport, when Jamie Carragher phoned in after hearing the presenters slagging him off on air about his decision to retire from England. I'm not a Liverpool fan but you've got to rate him for his one club loyalty and no-nonsense straight talking and honesty. Carragher's argument holds water, shame England didn't recognise his abilities, we could do with more like him in top flight football.

FREE KICK MASTERS: No. 1

Time to reminisce with one of the best free kicks ever seen at the City Ground for all Forest fans, here's the Dutch maestro Jonny Metgod showing an early example of 'traction foot' style, now fashioned in the modern day by Wollo 3rds' very own traction foot, Nick Evans....

It's almost broke the night despite being aimed straight at Phil Parkes...and check out the legendary goal celebration. Break out the SKOL.

WOLLO THIRDS FUNNY VID CLIP OF THE WEEK

After the disappointment of the 5-2 loss against Beeston, here's a brilliant retro Fantasy Football clip to put a smile on your face. Beardsley's a stand up genius!...

WOLLATON III 2 BEESTON OLD BOYS 5

MAA Premier Division League Match

Beeston Weirfields, Notts. Sat. Sept 20th, 2008.

Wollaton Goals: Nick Evans (2)

Team: Reece, Sheldon Miller, Dan Uber, Joe Lewis, Steve Burton, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Micky Evans, Andy Creswell, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton, Chris Fish. Subs: Dave Grantham, Josh Slade, John Baggott (all used)

This has got to be the strangest game of football I've ever played in; ending up 5-2 losers in a game which we were the better team and had the majority of possession and more chances than the opposition. But we were given a harsh lesson by Beeston in how to make capital by finishing in front of goal.

We had the worst start imaginable straight from kick off when we picked the ball up in midfield and sold the keeper short with a back pass which Beeston's striker intercepted and netted one-on-one. That was a lesson to be learnt from; in the first ten minutes keep it simple and play the odds. Beeston had done exactly what we did a week before against old Es; scored with less than a minute on the clock. To be fair, it's so early to score that it almost doesn't have the same effect as going 1-0 up after 20 or 30 minutes.

We responded well to the set back. It was as if our team had been goaded by the goal and immediately we found top gear from the kick off, strung a number of passes together down the right and Nick was played in and we drew level just three minutes. For some reason after that our play became disjointed for twenty minutes, we were knocking the ball long in desperation and giving the ball away cheaply. It was our worst period of the game. It was about five minutes after that when everything changed. We turned a corner, not just in the game but possibly for our season. For the first time in a long while everyone got the ball down and started to play passing football. We've all been talking about for a while but this was the moment the penny dropped for everyone.

We started making proper angles for each other, supporting the man on the ball and retaining possession and for 15 minutes we dominated, hitting the post and we certainly should have drawn level when a superb move involving about 20 passes ended with Nick side footing from the edge of the six yard box but he didn't quite hit it true and Beeston cleared off the line. Beeston were aware they'd gotten out of jail and started to press well and got a second when they sprung our offside trap and lobbed Reece. So despite all the play, we went in at half time 2-1 down and that's how the second half panned out.

We had a huge share of possession and played the better football but didn't take our chances, whilst Beeston made the most of theirs. Cressy had a couple of decent one-on-ones cutting in well from the right but their keeper smothered both efforts. With 20 minutes to go we were still physically fit but not quite mentally fit as lapses in concentration led to cheap balls given away in our own half and Beeston capitalised with speculative efforts which were well converted. Josh Slade came on to offer a glimpse of things to come with some good wing play on the left, setting up Nick with a header to grab a goal back but just when it looked like we were going to spark a comeback Beeston hammered the final nail in the coffin with a fifth goal.

So 5-2 losers and a tough lesson learnt. We should have made more capital with our chances in front of goal but we'd found our passing game and if we can stay true to that form, tighten up on concentration levels and take our chances we'll see a marked change in fortunes.

Man of the Match: Mark Middleton; ever showing for the ball often with his back to goal and with a defender breathing down his neck, great first touches and turns to open up play.

MESSI MAGIC: WOLLO 3RDS FOOTY CLIP OF THE WEEK

Drink it in....here it is; probably the best You Tube video montage of Lionel in action - his stunning hat trick performance gainst Real Madrid in the Nou Camp in 2006, his goals against Celtic last season in the Champions League and that wonder goal against Getafe after dribbling from the half way line and past most of the opposition before netting.

Quality music backdrop by Pearl Jam with the track 'Rearviewmirror'. Roll on May 10th Wollo Third teamers when we see the little man in the flesh at the Nou Camp against Villareal.

NEXT GAME: WOLLATON III v BEESTON OLD BOYS

MAA League Premier Division fixture.  To be played on Saturday Sept 20th, 2.30pm kick off at Beeston Weirfields, Nottingham.

OLD ELIZABETHANS 5 WOLLATON III 2

MAA Premier Division League

Mansfield, Notts. Saturday Sept 13th, 2008

Team: Dale Webster, Sheldon Miller, Liam Bates, Joe Lewis, Steve Burton, Micky Evans, Rocky Bennett-Bull, Dave Walker, Dean Hind, Nick Evans, Mark Middleton. Sub: Chris Fish (used).

Wollaton Goals: Nick Evans (2)

By my reckoning, this is the best side we'll face this season though that doesn't quite fully explain the 5-2 score line. Even though we went up to Mansfield with a 12 players (and we should have had a full squad of 14), we matched Old Es for everything until we became the victims of circumstance.

After playing Notts a week before in a mini monsoon, we stepped out of the old Elizabethan 'clubhouse' at Mansfield to face the hottest Saturday yet. You know global warming's kicking in proper when you come back from Mansfield with a mild tan. These are strange times we're living in.

We actually started very well, probably something to do with the fact we weren't limbering up for as long as Old Es. We were running a bit late and sometimes that's actually worked out better for us, seeing the oppo already out on the pitch but growing a bit bored before kick off.

We caught Old Es napping straight from the kick off with a move that saw us string several passes together straight from the kick off and ended with Nick driving a shot home past their keeper. It was a dream start but with not even a minute on the clock it was early doors.

That really rattled Old Es but it gave us a lot of confidence and we built on the goal with a few more moves, coming close with a Mark Middleton header and forcing a few early corners.

Old Es finally got into the groove after 20 minutes and drew level after intercepting a clearance on the halfway line from myself and stringing together a fast flowing move that saw the ball played across the box and past Dale in a matter of seconds. It was impressive free flowing football and was a warning sign of what they're capable of, particularly in the form of their left winger, who has pace to burn.

The reaction from our lads was superb and we got back into the game by causing most damage down the flanks, with Walker and Deano providing width and good link play. We went 2-1 up with 15 minutes to go to half time when Nick Evans turned his marker and scored with a well taken shot.

All we had to do was hold out till half time, which we did but we suffered the biggest setback of the game when Dale came out of his box to head clear a speculative bouncing ball punted forwards from their centre half and clashed heads with their striker. Dale won the header but came off much worse for his efforts, laying face down with a serious head wound which was bleeding heavily.

The game was stopped for ten minutes and when he did finally get to his feet he wanted to carry on, but common sense kicked in. He went to hospital and, after a five hour wait, ended up having 18 stitches. Apparently the doc said if the cut had been any deeper, he'd have fractured his skull, which they could see while stitching up the tissue and skin.

Back on the pitch, we were forced into a substitution we'd not planned for; Rocky is the most able in goal of our outfield players so he donned the gloves but we lost a big influence in the middle of the park. Walker did a job there though he's still not fully match fit and Chris Fish came on at left mid. That used up what he'd got on the bench. With no reserves to call upon it was going to be a tough second half.

Things could have been somewhat different had the match not turned on that incident. But we spent the second half trying to hold ground against a very strong squad. When we tired we had to dig in, when they tired they threw on a fresh pair of legs. It made a massive difference. Credit to our lads for not giving up and Nick and Mark took some real abuse up front.

We should have had a stone wall penalty when their centre half pushed Nick in the back when he went up for a header and the referee later disallowed a superb 'goal' by Walker from a free kick, saying he'd taken it too early (Thierry Henry style, over the wall and into the top corner). Walker retook it and sent the ball the over way, this time hitting the post. The ref was terrible. Funniest moment was when Walker called him a "divvy" after making a ludicrous decision.

So there you have it, 5-2 losers to Old Es but in somewhat restricting circumstances after being 2-1 up at half time. They turned in a very strong performance and were particularly threatening down the left flank. We're looking forward to playing them at home with a full squad and without any short straws, the outcome may well read a bit different.

Man of the Match: Nick Evans...typified our game, a gritty performance in the face of adversity with no protection from the ref.

It's been a long summer. Ropey weather and no English participation in the European Championships resulted in a summer that flat lined and dragged. Holidays and stag weekends are a welcome diversion but are no substitute for competitive Saturday afternoon football. It’s been such a long footballing break that when we played Notts Seconds in a friendly a week before this match it looked, at times, as if we'd forgotten how to play the game.

We said the result didn't matter since it was a friendly and it didn't but, for the record, we lost 5-2 at home. No points were gained and no points were lost. The most telling point to draw from the game was the noticeable levels of fitness; you could tell which players had pre season training sessions under their belts and which hadn't. Two weeks before in our other pre season friendly we'd gone up to Southwell and beat their seconds 1-0 and turned in a sensible display but Notts were a different kettle of squid; better organised, fitter and leaner. And that was their second string.

That 5-2 friendly loss focused the minds because we knew a week later (last Saturday) we would be facing their first team. Whether you'd gone to pre season training or you hadn't, the stark reality of what your lungs and legs were about to be subjected to on football pitch for 90 minutes of competitive action were just days away and the aches and pains were a sharp reminder for some. Last Saturday, when the third team season proper started, everyone drew on what reserves they'd built up and, somehow, managed a bit more besides to match Notts firsts and secure a hard fought and well earned point against a side that has just switched from the NAA to the MAA.

For the first ten minutes the back four were ever mindful of shielding Dale in goal from any early surprises and it was a case of clear the lines of anything Notts tried to throw at us to build some foundations at the back. It wasn't pretty but it was effective as each defender got their first challenge in on the deck and in the air. Notts firsts had seen last week's result and obviously decided to try their luck early on but came up against more resolve. It was a good statement of intent from our boys and set the stall out for a gritty, determined performance.

With Chris Fish away at a wedding, David Walker stepped in at left mid with Cressy on the right side and it was through those two that we started to build our first few chances with some good passing play. We went 1-0 up when Mark Middleton sprung their offside trap after good work down the right wing and remained cool one-on-one to put the ball inside the keeper's near post.

We could have had another with Walker and Nick both going close soon after in what was one of our best spells during the game as we put Notts under a fair amount of pressure. It was a bit too much for some of their lads, particularly their strikers who voiced some discontent back at their defence. The unconstructive criticism hit a raw nerve and after a few choice words they started to turn their game around. They looked particularly dangerous at corners, putting a strong headed effort just past the post and later Dale made a superb diving save from a later strike in free play.

We went in at half time 1-0 up, with the back four and Burts in particular having put in a very impressive first half. We were playing with much better shape and discipline all round and the back four looked pretty solid.

Make no mistake about it, in the second half for a period of twenty minutes Notts chucked everything at us including the kitchen sink and often grudgingly forced us back to our 18 yard line, with our midfield camped in our own half. They got an equaliser with a well taken goal and 15 minutes later got a second when we failed to track runners man-for-man and they attacked us down the right and squared to an unmarked striker for a tap in, despite Wollaton efforts to block the shot.

How we responded to the second goal was the acid test because, for all our efforts, that was a real kick in the teeth. We'd managed to hold out up to then, like plugging the gaps of a dam that threatened to overwhelm us with a surge. They'd also been building up big momentum and we had to pick ours up from scratch again, a lot harder.

As that ball gets placed back on the centre circle after conceding a goal, the mindset of everyone in a Wollo shirt is key for the next 10-15 minutes. Credit to all the lads, though the tide of play against us at that point was strong we managed to start 'swimming' against it and the tide turned in the last 15 minutes thanks to a massive effort from those in blue. Walker and Cressy continued to press hard down both wings and we started to ask some searching questions of their keeper.

Everyone worked their socks off for the cause and Rocky was making friends in the middle of the park with some fierce challenges. He's such an understated lad yet on the odd occasions it turns a bit apple pasty the oppo always seem to round on him - must be something to do with the name! We no longer call him by his first name since he was listed as ‘Rodney Bennett-Bull’ on a signing on form, so we just greet him with ‘Alright Dave’, in ‘Only Fools and Horses’ Trigger fashion. Bwillant. That one will run all season.

Thanks to a strong team effort we managed to stem the tide and came on strongest in the last 15 minutes and got our just deserts when we hit them for a third time in five minutes on the break and they hacked Nick down in desperation inside the box. With Fishy away at a wedding, Nick took the peno and traction foot lived up to his name with a raster blaster. When asked later in the dressing room why he blasted it rather than placing it he joked ‘It’s easier to blast it with your eyes closed!”. We could have won it at the end with some more close chances but a 2-2 draw proved a very fair result on balance of play.

Man of the Match: Rocky Bennett-Bull. There were several lads in contention for this but Rocky’s box-to-box play just steals it.
